40 Acts of Kindness
In the months before I turned 40, I knew I wanted to do something special.
My mother died in her early 40's and I've always had this sinking feeling
that I wouldn't make it past her age.
that I wouldn't make it past her age.
It's completely and totally irrational, I know.
But I've asked other "motherless daughters" about this concept,
and I've had it confirmed by them every single time.
and I've had it confirmed by them every single time.
So, if the only thing you read from this post is this...
Every. Day. Is. A. Gift.
Now that we are in the blogging world, I was busy one night in October, networking and commenting on blogs, and came across this blogger about what she did on her 38th birthday.
She celebrated by doing 38 random acts of kindness.
All the hairs went up on my arms, and I knew instantly that's what I wanted to do.
She celebrated by doing 38 random acts of kindness.
All the hairs went up on my arms, and I knew instantly that's what I wanted to do.
Could I do it? All in one day?
Would Michaela want to do it with me?
I called her immediately.
She started crying and of course said yes.
This is why I love her.
I've taken her on some crazy adventures, and she always says yes.
I even made her do a cleanse with me one time, (not one of my best ideas) but she still did it.
I even made her do a cleanse with me one time, (not one of my best ideas) but she still did it.
(It didn't work.)
Within about 2 days I had seven of my close friends and family along for the day. I'm a Christmas baby, born on December 23rd. Asking people to come along for an entire day right before Christmas is crazy-talking. But each person whole-heartedly said yes.
The best part was my teenage daughter asking if she could come.
The best part was my teenage daughter asking if she could come.
My heart was bursting with joy.
How would I pay for it?
As I wrote out my list of the 40 things, most of them would cost money. As I added it all up, we would need around $1000, and that seemed impossible.
I thought about asking my Dad to contribute as my birthday gift. On my way to have lunch with him, I prayed that he would have an open heart.
I also prayed that if my Dad wasn't the answer, that other doors would open to do this.
I also prayed that if my Dad wasn't the answer, that other doors would open to do this.
As I showed my Dad the list, I could tell his heart was softening to the idea.
He said immediately, "I'll give you a thousand dollars."
WOW.
If that wasn't an answer from God, I'm not sure what was.
We were in business. The kindness business.
Michaela made this beautiful logo so everything we would give away had this on it.
After weeks and weeks of planning and countless hours put in by our "giving crew",
we were ready to go.
I'm a little type A, so everything was numbered and Michaela's sweet husband mapped it all out for us. We had 39 planned, and intentionally left one open.
We just knew it would come to us sometime during the day.
Here is the beautiful "Giving Crew".
Loaded and decorated the cars!
1. Held a Giveaway in our Etsy Shop.
The Giveaway went out at 6am on our Facebook page and we gave away four items
from our Etsy shop for free.
2. Gave a gift to each member of the "Giving Crew".
3. Wrote 10 handwritten letters for people who have made a difference in my life.
4. Left our mail person a surprise in the mailbox.
5. Paid for two cars behind us at the Drive-Thru at Starbucks.
The second car we were in went inside to order their drinks so they could watch the reaction of the two cars receiving their gift. They told us that they were just looking at the Starbucks girl (who was adorable) with a dumbfounded look on their face.
We got that same look many times throughout the day.
6. Bought and delivered two dozen donuts to a support group in town for their 8am meeting.
7. Gave a woman at the recycling plant a truckload of cans and bottles.
The "Giving Crew" collected cans and bottles for a month and Michaela's husband met us at the local recycling plant with an entire truckload full. A woman was there with just one grocery bag. When we approached her, she wouldn't take them at first, and we had to do some convincing.
When she finally did, boy did her face light up!
8. Made 20 containers of playdough and delivered to the local food bank.
We bought the containers at the dollar store and made play dough and attached a cookie cutter for the kids who visit the local food bank with their parents.
I hope they brought a smile to a child's (and their parent's) face at a time when they need it the most.
9. Left laundry detergent at the laundromat.
I wish I could have hidden cameras everywhere we went. I would love to see the look on the person's face who opens that washer and sees that waiting for them!
10. Walked into the Dollar Store and gave away and hid 25 $1 bills.
This was one of the favorite stops. Not only did we hide them in the toys, but some of our "giving crew" walked up to kids in the store and handed them a dollar.
It was precious to see the perfect joy in their face by such a small act.
It was precious to see the perfect joy in their face by such a small act.
11. Delivered crayons and coloring books to the pediatric wing of our local hospital.
12. Donated my favorite book to the local library.
Daring Greatly is a book that changed how I view others...how I parent my children, and how I love with my whole heart. To learn more about the author, visit here.
13. Visited an assisted living facility and handed out Felt Flower pins to the residents.
I didn't expect this stop to be as magical as it was. These women were simply my favorite part of the day. They kept trying to pay us, and we kept telling them it was a gift. They were so gracious, so lovely. Some of them cried. We cried. We wished we could have stayed all day visiting with them.
I won't ever forget the joy I felt there.
14. Went to the animal shelter and donated dog treats.
15. Went to the dog park and left 2 cans of tennis balls.
16. Adopted a family and showered them with Christmas gifts.
We got word of a family in our school community that was in need, and we all came together to buy the 3 kids warm clothes and toys.
17. Passed out cold water bottles.
We found joggers, construction workers, gardeners, and came across some homeless men who we were able to give water to.
18. Place 40 "happy notes" on cars in a parking lot.
There's a lot of negative, angry people at Christmas time. They're the stressed, the financially strapped, the lonely and the broken.
Maybe one of these notes changed someone's day.
19. Delivered pizza to the local fire station.
My wonderful friend that does my hair is married to a firefighter.
(Michaela's husband is also one, so they are close to our hearts!)
So, we had this one planned ahead with her husband's station with an order of their favorite pizza.
20. Donated new stuffed animals to the fire station.
Firefighters like to give something to scared or hurt children they come across on their calls. We donated 60 brand new beanie babies that a wonderful lady at a craft fair gave me a HUGE deal on when she heard what I was doing.
After the picture, they sang Happy Birthday to me, and surprised me with a birthday gift from my sweet friend who does my hair.
21. Donated 90 cupcakes to a Christmas party.
My daughter and I volunteer each month at an organization that works with developmentally disabled adults. With perfect timing, they were having their annual Christmas party, and we delivered cupcakes for them to enjoy.
22. Volunteered washing windows at the Rescue Mission and donated food cans.
This was hanging up at the mission. Something we all need to hear.
23. Handed out blessing bags to homeless.
We filled these with socks, gloves, crackers and cookies, wipes, toiletries, combs, and bottled water. What was so touching to us, was how gracious each homeless person was to receive that bag.
They were so sweet and so appreciative that someone took the time to pay attention to them.
24. Bought 40 $1 lottery tickets and handed them out.
You would think a lottery ticket would be an easy thing to give away. It wasn't. People would look at us like there was some kind of catch. We had to "sell" them on the idea!
25. Gave a woman in the grocery store a $100 gift card.
This is the one we were all looking forward to.
We "staked" out the grocery store for about 10 minutes looking for the perfect person.
One of the "giving crew" had given this woman in the meat department (who we lovingly referred to as "chicken lady"), a lottery ticket.
Her reaction was so genuine. She was so grateful for that $1 lottery ticket, and started crying.
We gathered back together to make our decision and settled on "chicken lady".
My friend Lynn yelled "I LOVE chicken lady!"
We couldn't wait to give it to her.
As she came around the corner, we all approached her and I handed her the card.
My apologies for these pictures.
Because we were all so excited, we were shaking!
Here she is telling us...
"we better not be pranking her, because she was having a really bad day!"
Here come the tears....from all of us.
It was such a beautiful moment.
We forget that everyone is fighting some kind of battle...and everyone has a story.
At that moment, we were able to change her story.
It was clear that we were led to the right person.
26. Collected all of our loose change in a "Kindness Jar" and randomly chose a family to give it to.
On our way to the park, Michaela stopped the car, and felt led to this house.
She walked up and gave it to the lady who owned the house,
who skeptically looked at her like she was nuts.
We would giggle throughout the day at the looks from people.
They want to know WHY. Why would someone give it to THEM?
27. Gave out Christmas gift boxes.
We put together 5 Christmas boxes for boys, and 5 for girls.
My church hands out boxes for you to put together and put toys and needed items for a little girl or boy. Instead of sending them out to another country, you are encouraged to hand them out to someone in your community.
If we had 50 of these, we would have been able to give them all out.
We ran into many needy kids that day.
28. Cleaned up a local park and hung bird seed balls.
29. Taped the exact amount to Vending Machines.
30. Made 40 cinnamon ornaments and placed them in a random neighborhoods' mailboxes.
31. Left 10 diaper bags in public restrooms.
32. Gave money to a stranger.
This was the unplanned act of the day. On the way to our next stop, we spotted this beautiful lady with her baby and saw her sign. We knew we had to stop.
33. Passed out 40 pom pom bookmarks at the bookstore, and held the door open for customers coming out.
34. Gave a movie gift card to a couple walking to the movie theater.
Turns out it was also HER birthday! They were thrilled!
35. Left quarters in candy machines.
Can you imagine being 7 years old and walking up to a row of machines with money already in them?
36. Gave two families $25 to Chick-fil-A.
I have a serious love for Chick-fil-A sauce.
(and their nuggets)
(and their peppermint chocolate chip milkshake)
Our local Chick-fil-A gives so much back to our community, that it seemed like a perfect fit to have them part of our day.
We chose a couple walking in with their grandchildren,
and a dad walking in with his kids.
37. Returned shopping carts at Target.
38. Handed out 5 Rosemary Wreaths to customers coming out of Target.
39. Left our server a generous tip.
We were almost done!
But I knew there was one person left to show some kindness...
My wonderful husband.
Who endured losing me for weeks in my craft room planning and prepping this day.
He has a serious sweet tooth, and is a lover of pie.
All pie.
Especially his favorite bakery's pie.
40. Bought a pie and brought it home to my husband.
We showed kindness to hundreds of people that day. We can't put into words how it made us feel to touch that many lives in one day.
The joy I felt and the love that surrounded us that day was immeasurable.
Throughout the day the "giving crew" was posting on Facebook, and many people were cheering us on, and some would comment to let us know they also did an act of kindness that day,
because we inspired them.
And that's what it's all about.
Imagine what our world would be like if for just one of your life's birthdays,
each person chose to do this.
Kindness inspires Kindness.
We hope this inspired you.
***1/12/13 We recently recorded a podcast with The Power of Moms about this incredible day. If you'd like to hear more, here is the link.

DeleteFound your link via the Birthday Project FB page, and wow, this is amazing! Love all the detail you put into it, and the love!! Good on you!! I did this for my 23rd birthday, and can't wait to do it again next year!!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome Bonnie! Hopefully you picked up some new ideas too!
DeleteWhat a wonderful thing you did. About 10 years ago when we may kids were in grade school I started making Snowman Soup packets for the Food Pantry deliveries. The first year we made about 40 of them. Each year as my kids have grown the need has increased as well...so all the teachers that helped along the way added their new classes to the group. This year we had 100 families we needed to help out but I had an even larger challenge for the kids and teachers. We needed over 500 snow man soup kits for the children at the Memorial School in Union Beach NJ. My family had gone to volunteer there and after seeing the kids town torn apart I thought they needed some snowman soup to put a twinkle in their eye for the holiday season. The kids did it and it was such a great experience. One I will never forget.
ReplyDeleteThat is so great! So you too understand the intense joy!!!
Deletesmiling from ear to ear reading this!! cheers to you and your giving crew for making a difference. XOXO
ReplyDeleteThanks Amanda! We are happy we could put a smile on your pretty face! xo
DeleteThank you so much for sharing this link with me Amy! I teared up at all of the amazing things you did. The work and organization it took (especially around Christmas like you mentioned) is outstanding. I've seen the post that inspired several people to do the same. I'm adding this to my bucket list. There is absolutely nothing better than the feeling of giving- a full day of it would change my life I'm sure. Happy (belated) Birthday! xoxo, Mique

April thank you so much for your sweet words! From a blogger like you, that means so much to me! I've messaged you and we are thrilled and honored!
DeleteHi, I love this idea! I'm talking to a group of about 70 women about speading kindness and my daughter pinned your experience. I want to share what you did as inspiration. I was also wondering if I could use your darling Logo? I would love to give each woman 10 of the badges to spread out and do something in our area. 70 x 10 = lots of kindness. We will keep it going! Thanks for your examples of kindness!
ReplyDeleteOf course...we would be happy to change it for you! Just email us and we can take the birthday part off for you and send it to you.

ReplyDeleteLove & Blessings to you as your random acts of kindnesses continues to circle and expand!!!
XO
Thank you so much! I think if you had plenty of time to plan you could do so many that wouldn't cost much. I was blessed to be given that money. It was also amazing to see people give me things to donate, just knowing what I was doing. So get the word out there! You'll be amazed at what happens!
DeleteI saw your posting on the Random Acts of Kindness FB page - I LOVE it! It has made my wheels turn ... with some saving and planning for something I want to do this year. Thanks for inspiring!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you saw it and were inspired! It's so touching to know that one day is having an effect on so many! Thank you for your kind words.
DeleteLove this idea! And kudos to you for making such a difference in the world. This year is my big "5-0" and I'm going to start working on plans for my August birthday so I can also change the world with some random acts of kindness. Thanks for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! With careful planning you can do 50 no problem!! I hope it's your best birthday ever!
DeleteAmy -
ReplyDeleteI am starting to plan to do this ... actually 4 times throughout the year (if it can be pulled off, we'll see). I want to ask you your permission to borrow the Tag Line, or inspiration - "Kindness inspires Kindness". I have mentioned you and shared your blog on my FB page - when the time comes that we get the days, I will give you the proper shoutouts and mentions in my blog as well as on FB, Twitter and Pinterest.
If you would prefer I didn't use that tagline, that's fine. I didn't want to just use it though without asking your permission. I can come up with another name.
Anita
PLEASE use the tagline! I am happy to share! I just love that this post has touched your heart in a way that I was first inspired. Please share with us what you, we would love to hear about it!
DeleteThanks, Amy! I will!
DeleteAnd thank you for sharing such a heart warming day! I have already shared your page - and know of some people in different areas of the country who plan to carry out something similar.
I am so thankful my friend Gina (Silverlakesound) referred me to your blog. My favorite story here is the Chicken Lady and the grocery gift card. Left me in tears. I think you've given me an idea for my next birthday, or perhaps I'll wait a few years until I turn 50 and do it up big! I'm following along your blog now.
ReplyDeleteThank you for following us! Chicken Lady is super special to me and doesn't even realize the impact she is having on people right now! I'm so thankful for her!
DeleteHappy, Happy Birthday.
ReplyDeleteI got such big smile out of your post. Like you, I am a Christmas baby [December 18th] and my gift this year to myself was exactly what you did. I went around and created 49 [I'm a wee-bit older than you] random acts of kindness.
Many Blessings to you.
Life is truly a gift and love how you are celebrating yours!
Peace and love, Tara Marie
Thank you Tara Marie! Christmas is the perfect time to do it too because there is so many different things you can do! Here's to the Christmas babies! xo
DeleteThank you so much for doing this, and for sharing it. I can only imagine how joyful and fulfilled you felt at the end of the day. So inspiring. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteEven 14 days later...I'm still incredibly joyful about it. And when I read comments like yours how I inspired someone, it makes me feel all giddy inside all over again! Thank you for reading!
DeleteOh me, oh my. You have inspired me, girl! Fab and unique ideas.
ReplyDeleteThank you Amy! I'm so touched you took the time to read and then leave a comment as well!
DeleteThat was great! Thank you for your inspiration
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome! Have a whimsical day!
DeleteLove it!! And my birthday is coming up! I am inspired to try something similar...maybe each Saturday of my birthday month, cuz that will give me more time to prepare!! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful idea!!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea!! Its definitely a commitment to pack it all in one day! Thank you for reading!
DeleteThis is so awesome! Love wins! :)
ReplyDeleteYes!! xoxo
Deleteok, so i have never heard of you, but i followed the link from Glennon on FB. and I cried the whole way through this. You are an amazing person, and I am very certain that your mom was watching from above, and that she was incredibly proud of you as well♥
ReplyDeleteI love this idea and think I might just like to try it on some random day :) thanks for the inspiration!!
You don't know how much your words touch my heart. I felt very connected to my mom that day and even more so with your kind words. <3
DeleteI love that you did for so many other people on your birthday. Such a wonderful gift you have given. Happy Birthday.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jules! It was the BEST birthday ever!
DeleteThis is so awesome!! I am so going to be doing this for my next Birthday this year. I am turning 45!!!
ReplyDeleteVERY COOL! You'll find if you just start writing them down how easy it is to come up with them! Come back and tell us all about it when your'e done!
DeleteVery cool idea!, huge kudos to you and everyone that helped you out :D
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading! I appreciate it more than you know!
DeleteI did this on a smaller scale for my 40th in June. It is an amazing feeling for sure. My hat is off to you and your friends. Well done!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Lori! I'm sure you can agree it made coming into 40 much easier!! :)
DeleteHow wonderful! My heart is touched by all of that kindness. I'm feeling inspired. This will definitely be something I will do/facilitate in the future. I'm thinking an annual anniversary event for a local women's service organization. Thanks for the inspiration. And thanks for being YOU!! Sending a hug...
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a GREAT idea! Hugs back! xo
DeleteLove it! My boys and I have been doing random acts of kindness and blogging about it this past year. I often think we've gotten much, much more out of this then any of the strangers. Happy 40th!!
ReplyDeleteRight? I think I was more blessed that day and beyond than anyone I came across! So awesome that you've been doing it with your kids! My teenager got so much out of that day!!
DeleteI don't usually get to the point where tears are *actually* falling down my face, but this post did it. This is the most amazing thing I have read in years, and as someone struggling with faith and uncertain if there is actually any genuine love for mankind left in the world, you have touched my heart profoundly.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing.
(Found from UBC Facebook group.)
Wow. Thank you! There really is love out there, you just have to go out and give it. It will come back to you tenfold.
DeleteThis made me get teary and my heart feel so big and inspired, I am going to start doing more random acts of kindness! I want to get a crew together to do something like this once a month in our town (maybe smaller scale, but still...) I also want to bring one of my kids along each time, so they can begin to see the power of kindness and love in the world. Good job, ladies! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a great idea! Bringing my teenage daughter along with us was probably the best thing about that day. She got so much out of it and was so inspired afterwards she now wants to start a kindness club at her high school! There is so much power in love and kindness! :) Thanks for reading!
DeleteAbout fell out of my chair when I saw the pics with "Corona" on them, here's a shout out from Fallbrook, about 40 miles south of you (much longer of course since I found you via Momastery - saw this link to this post on her facebook wall!) I'm pretty sure I've been to that Target, in fact, I was there the day before your birthday/day of kindness. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this super fun story. Blessings on your 40th year! I think your 41st act of kindness was warming the hearts of everyone who reads this!!!
Hi neighbor! Thanks for taking the time to read it! Fallbrook is BEAUTIFUL!! And thanks for your kind words!

ReplyDeleteThank you! Super proud to be a Monkee too. I love everything about Glennon and her movement!
DeleteYou can do it!!!
Hi Amy I do not know you at all but this is an absolutley lovely idea my friend Jen posted on her facebook page that she found this to be a good idea for her 30th birthday and I just read each and every word on here and was so touched by it that I feel that I will now need to encourage her to not only do this but let me help her do it I am not a particularly religious person but my daughter is and I would say this is one of the most genuinely caring and thoughtful ideas I have ever seen...peace and love to you and your friends...btw I am in Scotland...so good news does travel.
ReplyDeleteWow John thank you so much for taking the time to read it, and I'm so touched that you would want to help her. I received the nicest letter from my Dad along with the check he sent me telling me how proud he was of me. It's like pure gold.

ReplyDeleteWow Carrie! That's awesome! It's been amazing for us to see what our day is carrying on to do in other people's lives! Bless you for wanting to be so kind!
DeleteHow beautiful to see someone changing the world through the power of love. Your idea inspired me to make this as a retirement idea for my dad. I'm going to get a jar, fill it with pieces of paper with random acts of kindness ideas (such as the ones you shared) and have him open up one each week to find out what exciting thing he gets to do. Thank you for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThat is a FANTASTIC idea Cori! Glad you were inspired! Thank you for your sweet words.
DeleteA friend posted this on Facebook. I love, Love, LOVED it! I'm in Australia so you are being shared - globally :) Isn't it wonderful that the world can be 'taken over' one good deed at a time?
ReplyDeleteIt's super cool!! Kindness taking over the world....I like the sound of that!! xo
DeleteThis is such a great idea! My birthday is coming up and I plan to do something similar. I was wondering where you got the "Kindness" necklaces you gave to your crew? They are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I got them from an Etsy shop called The Woodland Burrow. But, unfortunately she isn't selling them anymore or else I would have gladly linked her! You can always convo her and see if she will make some more! I think I bought her last 9. :)
DeleteHere is the link to her shop:

This has me in tears. What a truly wonderful idea and what a day that must have been!! Love it!!
ReplyDeleteIt really was a day I'll never forget in my life. I'm so touched that you were moved. Thank you for reading.
DeleteWOW! I want to do this. If not all, at least it gave me some ideas of what small things I could do to help others. You are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!
ReplyDeleteThank you Amy! Love the name!

ReplyDeleteAlso - wondering if you can share the graphic for the "happy card" and the kindness stickers you used so I can amend it for my 50th bday? Thanks!

DeleteOne of my best friends told me about this wonderful birthday idea. I will be turning 50 on May 26th this year and have already started gathering Janee's Crew of Joy... What an amazing thing! I love all your ideas! Let's see if I can pull off 50. Thank-you and your BFF for the wonderful inspiration! Water is leaking from my face as I read about your incredible day!

DeleteI LOVE LOVE LOVE this. I'm inspired!!
ReplyDeleteYou did this all in one day? Wow. How awesome! I mean, even if you didn't do it all in one day, how awesome! :) I LOOOOOVE this idea! I didn't do anything for my 30th birthday last year, maybe I need to make up for lost time this year? Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Seriously, so awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up with us on Life Lately this week!

My birthday was yesterday and we did this. I turned 37 so we aimed for 37 acts of kindness. We started at 8:45 and stopped at 6:30 and we didn't finish! I still have the remaining supplies so it'll get done in the next few days. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I virtually copied most of your ideas. You even sent me a customized KIK logo! Six friends joined me, some for just a few hours. And a couple of others who couldn't make it did acts wherever they were. It was my best birthday ever! And plenty of people (friends who read about it on fb and strangers we met) have said they were INSPIRED and now taking the idea for themselves. A great day indeed! Some things we did: deliver donuts and a cake; volunteer for an hour at Ronald McDonald House and another hour serving lunch at a soup kitchen; Starbucks and lottery tickets giveaway; grocery store, movie theater, and book store gift cards; generous tip and buying dessert for a sweet, older couple at lunch; pinning $1's on toys at Dollar Store; returning shopping carts; and a favorite was sidewalk chalking the driveways of two pastors, music and children's directors from church. We had an absolute blast!

Katie,
DeleteWe can't tell you how much it means to us when we hear one of these stories! I love the idea of Sidewalk Chalking! So cool! Happy Birthday and thank you SO MUCH for sharing with us!
What an incredible way to spend your birthday! I've seen other people do this for their b-days, but some of your ideas are just so original. I love the coins in the candy machines for kids to find! I'm actually doing a challenge this month (30 Random Acts of Kindness in 30 Days - and I'm asking others to join me!) and you've definitely helped inspire me. Thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteWillow, Thank you so much for the kind words. How did your 30 acts in 30 days go? We would love to hear!
DeleteThank you so much for sharing what your acts of kindness. My aunt recently passed away, and in her final days we were all surprised to learn of the hundreds of times she had given to others, often anonymously. In tribute to her, I wanted to continue this tradition. After reading your blog post today, I am going to make a it one-year project of giving. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful tradition to honor the memory of your aunt! We are so happy you were inspired by this!
